THE PROBLEM
With hundreds of customers, Intelerad has grown to be the market leader in medical imaging solutions. This growth presented a unique set of challenges, leaving the team low on time and capacity to retire older technologies, move to the cloud, or improve architecture. The company’s flagship IntelePACS platform relied heavily upon decades-old, legacy architecture deployed on-premises. New releases required full deployment of a large monolith, resulting in slower, more disruptive updates than Intelerad wanted, and version fragmentation across more than 240 active installations in the field.
Intelerad partnered with Kickdrum to modernize the IntelePACS platform and unlock version defragmentation so they could avoid escalating costs and delayed innovation, and increase customer upgrade adoption.
THE SOLUTION
Intelerad partnered with Kickdrum to undertake a comprehensive modernization program for IntelePACS across two key areas:
Modularization of the monolith: By analyzing where change was most frequent, Kickdrum split IntelePACS into core components that could be built, tested, and deployed independently. This “big split” dramatically reduced build times and allowed sidecar deployments, enabling customers to upgrade individual components rather than waiting for full system releases.
Build automation componentization: Kickdrum developed a new build automation framework to test and release updates faster.
THE OUTCOMES
Kickdrum’s architecture modernization increased the performance and reliability of the IntelePACS platform, helping accelerate innovation by cutting build times and increasing engineering velocity, reducing risk and operating costs by eliminating dependence on unsupported systems, and improving quality through expanded test automation and version consolidation.
Key Outcomes:
Up to 80% faster build times: reduced from more than 2 hours to 46 minutes
Enabled version defragmentation by 66%+: consolidated strategic customers down from hundreds of versions to a handful of recent releases
Introduced new avenues for monetization, by decomposing the monolithic system into separate Viewer and PACS components, which could be sold independently.
