THE PROBLEM
Clario, Intelerad’s radiologist worklist solution, plays a critical role in ensuring imaging exams are routed and assigned for timely physician review. Over time, the platform’s on-premise, batch-oriented architecture began to limit its flexibility, scalability and performance. Orders were processed in groups rather than individually, meaning urgent “stat” cases could wait minutes before assignment, leading to a delay in time-sensitive care.
These constraints slowed radiologist productivity, increased operational complexity, and ultimately impacted patient care. Recognizing the need to enable urgent cases to get the timely review necessary, Intelerad partnered with Kickdrum to migrate Clario to a cloud-native AWS architecture that increased the flexibility, scalability and speed of the solution.
THE SOLUTION
To modernize Clario, Kickdrum delivered a series of architectural and infrastructure enhancements that together transformed performance, scalability, and responsiveness.
Migrated to the cloud: Migrated Clario from a self-hosted, on-premise deployment to a scalable, resilient cloud-based platform on AWS
Built rules-based architecture: Replaced batch-oriented database processing with a rules-based engine that enabled orders to be prioritized and rapidly assigned in milliseconds to radiologist worklists
Modernized infrastructure: Introduced queues and event-based processing to guarantee the assignment of exams without delay under any load, with low-cost, elastic infrastructure
Workflow modularization: Decomposed monolithic architecture to streamline exam routing between multiple systems
Together, these changes positioned Clario to handle thousands of rules and exams in real time, increase velocity of feature deployments across a large and diverse customer base, and support intelligent workload distribution.
